Vietnam National University – HCMC rose 5 places in QS Asia University Rankings

The latest ranking of 400 universities in Asia by QS Rankings has just been announced and most noticeable, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City had jumped five ranks comparing to that of the previous year 2016.

Accordingly, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), with only 3 ranks lower than the Vietnam National University – Ha Noi (VNU-HN), had jumped 5 ranks and currently staying at the rank 142th out of 400 universities in Asia. Within this ranking, VNU-HN stabilizes its position at the 139th, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has ranked up and now being grouped in-between the 291-300.

Opposite to the rising trend of the three universities mentioned, the ranks of Hue University and Can Tho University were slightly dropped. More specifically, Hue University had dropped from 301-350 to 352-400; and Can Tho University had dropped from 251-300 to 301-500

To analyze these changes, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Vice Director of Education Quality Assurance Center, said that the results of QS ranking system have shown the overall efforts of VNU-HCM on all fields.

This improvement is from the efforts of all students, lecturers and professors of Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Hua Duy Khang, Vice Director of Training of Can Tho University, shared that QS Rankings is a very well-known and trustworthy international ranking. That’s the reason why the University very concern about its rank on the list and always adjust the activities in order to maintain and keep them ranking up. However with every different point of time, there will be a different performance which leads to a change of rank.

Mr. Nguyen Hua Duy Khang, Vice Director of Training of Can Tho University, shared that QS Rankings is an international ranking organization, working independently so the results are relatively objective. Therefore, the university is very interested in this ranking and will always pay attention to adjust in all activities not to just maintain the performance only but to improve the overall performance also.

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is one of the top three organizations of the world in universities ranking. There were six criteria have been used to evaluate, including: academic reputation (40%), reputation of employer (10%), teacher / student ratio (20%), scientific excerpts per lecturer (20%), international lecturer ratio (5%), International student ratio (5%).

With the criteria ‘academic reputation’ which is the most important criterion, QS brings together the opinions of more than 70,000 higher education professors for checking for the quality of teaching and research. This is the world’s largest academic survey.

In addition, excerpts is considered to be an important criteria when it comes to educational institution’s mission. For ranking purpose, QS sums up the number of articles, scientific excerpts from lecturer of each university in the last 5 years.
