Bach Khoa Lecturer wins UNESCO SCIENCE PRIZE

The winner of the “L’Oreal – UNESCO” is no other than Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu, a lecturer from the Faculty of MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Bach khoa) (Vietnam National University).
Recently, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has awarded the “L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2017” in the field of Materials Science and Life Sciences to five female scientists:
1. Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu (Lecturer, Faculty of Materials Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Bach khoa) – VNU-HCM) with research and fabrication of intelligent silicon that can “record & remember shape” and “self-heal” as medical materials to help implant and healing scratches or wounds.
2. Dr. Tran Phuong Thao (Lecturer, Department of Pharmacology, Hanoi University of Pharmacy) with research & development of inhibitor glutaminyl cyclase enzyme, treatment for Alzheimer.
3. Dr. Hoang Thi Dong Quy (Lecturer, Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, University of Science – VNU-HCM) with research on composite/ nanocomposite fireproof polymer, environment-friendly fireproof materials that included polyurethane, phosphorus/ phosphorus-nitrogen.
4. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoai (Lecturer of Faculty of Pharmacy, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy) with research and development of medicinal plants of Van Kieu ethnic minorities (Central of Vietnam area) called “Bu De Tia” and “Man Dia” that capable to be put in use for cancer treatment and antioxidant.
5. Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Dung (Institute of Environmental Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) with research on nanomaterials, especially silver nanoparticle technology that has many functions: healing wounds & ulcers, water-filters for household, diaper tapes, and protective masks.
Dr. Dung Tran’s work has been clinically tested in many major hospitals such as National Burn Institute, Hospital 103, Viet Duc Hospital. The results show that product from her scientific project can be used to effectively treat grade 1, 2, 3 burns, long-term necrotic ulcers, skin lesions, and shortened treatment time to 10- 50% compared to conventional methods.
Dr. Thu Nguyen, Dr. Thao Tran, and Dr. Quy Hoang will receive research scholarships worth 150 million VND per person to continue their scientific research projects. Dr. Hoai Nguyen, and Dr. Dung Tran won the “Women Scientist of Excellence 2017” worth 50 million VND / person.
L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award was first launched in Vietnam in 2010. In the past seven years, the award has honored 24 female scientists for outstanding contributions in the field of scientific research and helped them to pursue their passion for science.
Selection criteria are based on outstanding scientific research achievements through the number of articles published on the international scientific journals, published scientific products, scientific research projects that candidates have been taking part in, and acting as an ideal model for younger generations of researchers.
In the year 2015, Vietnamese female scientist Tran Ha Lien Phuong was honored as “World Female Scientist To Look Out For” in Paris, put the name of Vietnam on the map of reputed scientists.
