That is the statement of Ph.D. Nguyen Quoc Chinh – Director of the Center for Educational Testing and Quality Assessment in the discussion named “Improving international rankings”, held by this center at the Head Quarter Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) on December 10th, 2019.
According to Professor Nguyen Quoc Chinh, QS Asia University rankings 2019 has seen the appearance of 8 higher educational institutions, one of those is a new face. Most of the institutions got the same or lower rankings in the last 3 years. Particularly, VNU-HCM has improved its ranking by 1 position, Hue University’s ranking and University of Da Nang’s ranking have remained the same, VNU’s ranking has dropped for 3 positions and Can Tho University’s ranking has decreased for 100 positions on QS Asia Rankings 2020.
To comment about the score of each criterion in QS Asia Rankings of VNU-HCM in 2020 compared to that of 2019, Professor Nguyen Quoc Chinh believes that the scores of VNU-HCM in the criteria related to the academy and research quality have improved. However, these criteria rankings of VNU-HCM tend to decrease.
“It means that our universities are making great progress in enhancing the quality of its academic department (employees who got master’s degrees), increasing the volume and quality of scientific research (the number of articles/ academic team; the number of references; research networks), stimulating globalization activity (attracting more academic employees and foreign or exchange students). VNU-HCM needs to pay close attention to this trend in order to remain the competitive advantage compared with other universities on QS Asia Rankings.” – said Ph.D. Nguyen Quoc Chinh.
After breaking down the result from QS Asia Rankings 2020 of VNU-HCM compared with Southeast Asian universities which are in the TOP 100 of QS Asia, Ph.D. Nguyen Quoc Chinh stated that the total score of these universities increased but the rankings still dropped.
“The scores of some universities like Chualalongkor University (at joint 45th), Indonesia University (at joint 59th) and the Philipines University (at joint 72nd), if compared with VNU-HCM, tend to decrease in 2 criteria which are academic and employer reputation. For these two criteria, VNU-HCM’s scores steadily increase and up-close to TOP 100 Asian Universities. This somehow reflects the fact that today, more and more universities in our area are doing well in asserting themselves in the international academic community and labor market.”
In the discussion, there were many more reports about the experience of ranking participation and discussions about the solutions to improve VNU-HCM’s rankings in international charts.
