SOFTWARE ENGINEERING: NEVER RUN OUT OF HEAT
The average income of software engineers (with 4 years of experience) in Vietnam is nearly 4/5 comparing to those in China, and double to those in India.
Lack of Software Engineers
Many years ago, Information Technology (IT) was expected to have strong development in the future. The reality has proved that this sector still remains opportunities for development in Vietnam. Since policies to improve Vietnam’s competitiveness, many industries has been directing, coordinating for development and applying facilities, modern technological equipments. Thereby, many industries will require large amount of qualified manpower to contribute for their development.
According to statistics from Thanh Nien Newspaper, there are 13.28% of the total 1,200 domestic enterprises which are in great demand of manpower in IT, especially software engineers. Moreover, at present, many large corporations from Australia, the US, Japan are looking for large quantities of software engineers in Vietnam to support activities related to software engineering.
Thus, most software engineers don’t find any difficulty getting a job, they only have to think about choosing where to develop their career. However, the shortage of human resources associated with the limited professional qualifications of engineers will badly affect the quality of related industries.

THE ESCALATED CRISIS LEADS TO THE ESCALATION IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERS’ INCOME
In the crisis, the majority of sectors got affected and encountered difficulties. However, software engineers are of the least affected by the crisis. Moreover, this sector has greatly grown despite the economic circumstances. This is a strong evidence showing that software engineering is always growing positively, while many branches go downhill.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communication, many foreign companies are still recruiting aggressively and agreed to pay about 2000 USD/month for a trained software engineer. According to Payscale.com, a website specialized in salary comparison, the average income of software engineers (with 4 years of experience) in Vietnam is nearly 4/5 comparing to those in China, and double to those in India.
Under this circumstance, domestic enterprises now have more recruitment policies to attract engineers by the highly-paid salary along with remuneration, training… Hence, this sector is considered to be “immune” to the economic crisis and be the most stable industry in any social situations.
An interesting work
Knowledge: Students studying software engineering will have solid knowledge base of IT, knowledge of software, programming and applications as well as how to operate them. Many people have to admit that this industry cause less stress than the those also related to numbers (see more information about this sector HERE). It is also considered as a “talk-less-do-more” kind of job because the amount of basic knowledge is not too massive and whenever new knowledge comes, there comes a chance to apply it immediately since software engineers always have their computer with them 24 hours a day.
Besides, students can also equip themselves with basic soft skills such as teamwork, ideas presentation, logical thinking … In major projects, these skills turn out to be more necessary. In addition, software engineers must be understanding towards their customer’s thoughts and needs to receive feedback. Although software engineers are well-qualified in IT, they often do works related to research, problem solving or testing, evaluating rather than programming and data analysis.

Development Orientation
Although the future engineers do not have to worry about the future career but if you want to get the best environment with the best conditions, learners should be aware and pay much attention in choosing a institution/university to study. In the current trending context, students have more and more access to major and reputed universities in the world. Many international universities in Australia and the United States has very high quality training programs which students pay much attention to, such as The University of Queensland, La Trobe University… The University Queensland is one of the 8 top universities of Australia in educating software engineers.
What makes the international environment unique is that this industry needs more knowledge, new insights and should aim to be applied in practice. Along their study, students can develop skills and get more proper orientation to develop their future career. On the other hand, diploma degrees received from these universities are internationally valid, and is recognized in many areas, ensuring that graduates can find a pleasant job in 6 months. Moreover, the average income of software engineers worldwide is $ 69,433 USD/year, which is five times higher than the income of those in Vietnam.
Generally speaking, Software Engineering is not too different from other IT industries, it is still on track to grow despite difficulties. The study in this sector is not easy, but very interesting and your studying effort will be worthy. If you intend to study Software Engineering, plan for yourself from now on!
