TIPS TO BALANCE STUDY AND PART-TIME WORK

For many students, having a part-time job is to help them earn more income, learn more experience in the working environment. So how can you achieve the balance of work, study and other activities? Try to apply these tips below to be able to study and work in a balanced way.

1. GOALS OF HAVING A PART-TIME JOB

Before starting to apply for a job, you should clearly identify your goals when you start that job. Most of the students who have a limited budget but have to cover many expenses such as rent, meals, transportation. Therefore, you want to work more to have more income. On the other hand, other students’ aim is only to gain experience so they can easily apply for a job when graduating.

Whatever your goals are, remember that the part-time job is just a side part of your uni life and only for a short or temporary period. Your studies and graduation are the goals needed to be achieved and settled for the future. Setting clear goals make it easier to plan and find a suitable job.

2. ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A PART-TIME JOB

Getting a part-time job, you must obtain many skills such as planning, managing time, managing yourself and communication skills. In particular, communication skills are essential because you have to negotiate with your boss, communicate with colleagues and meet customers’ requirements. To see that, part-time jobs will bring many advantages to students after graduation and find a stable job later, thus, you will be motivated and responsible for the job you choose and work more effectively.

3. REASONABLE ARRANGEMENT

Most universities today allow students to schedule their own credits, giving students more free time if they know how to arrange a schedule and work scientifically. Normally, you should register for classes in the morning because you are most active to learn the lesson. Noon is resting time and then to do homework. Arranging your working hours in the afternoon or evening is also the most reasonable option for you. It would be much better if the work ends before 9 p.m. so that you have time to rest and prepare lessons for the next day.

To have a good schedule, you should write down your plans in your diary or use a task reminder application. And it is important to strictly follow and be self-conscious to complete the plan.

4. CHOOSE THE PERFORMING WORK

You may need a part-time job, but make sure to consider which job is suitable to you for the long-term goal of gaining work experience after graduation. For example, students who study information technology can apply for a computer repair company; or work as a collaborator in the newsroom if you major in journalism; or tutor if you study pedagogy; be a salesman if you study business or marketing. Part-time jobs should be beneficial for your studies and future career.

Do not forget to understand carefully about the work, working environment, hours, wages and reputable recruitment information channels, with clear and transparent information.

5. RECORDING YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS DURING WORKING

Employers will be very impressed with the students who have experience working part-time in the CV. By assessing this, they can see your potentiality with necessary soft skills, the ability to be proactive and responsible for the job. Therefore, remember to record any skills and knowledge that you have used in your work, for example: teamwork, event organization, customer service, usage of new systems/technologies, or any achievements for example: Good feedback from your manager or customer. Be confident to express yourself in your CV when applying for jobs later.

6. TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF

Remember that you only have 24 hours a day, so in addition to studying and working, you need to take time to rest and relax. Spend valuable time on entertainment, sports or pursuing an art that you love and need to ensure your own health. Because ultimately health is the most important thing, when you have a balance between study, work and relax, you can complete everything well.
