WHAT PETROLEUM ENGINEERS DO ?

Many people think that Petroleum Engineers only do one thing is drilling oil. Is this really true? And what is the potential of this industry?

In general, the aim of the petroleum industry is to bring oil and gas resources to serve the production operation, working and living.

However, the petroleum industry is not only about extracting oild and gas but also many important activities that if one of them does not work well, the petroleum extraction process will not go smoothly.

List of  jobs that petroleum engineering graduates can undertake:

  • Engineer exploration and exploitation work with geologists and contractors in the design and monitoring of operational drilling, oil and gas extraction
  • Engineering design of oil and gas reservoirs: the use of sophisticated computer models to determine the optimal oil recovery, mapped local number, type and location of oil wells
  • Expert on environmental safety in the mining, oil and gas production
  • Expert seismic research, analyze oil and gas, etc ..

Petroleum is a young but potential industry in Vietnam. This combination of study petroleum engineering science and scientific traditions manage to meet the needs of the current workforce of the petroleum industry on the basis of economic development – sustainable society. Thus, students of this sector has encountered many challenges and also opportunities approach.

According to Dr. Ta Quoc Dung – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Geological & Petroleum Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the is great demand of employee in this sector in the next 5- 10 years in Vietnam due to local oil companies expansion and significant increase in foreign investment. Therefore, to meet the needs of petroleum industry, employess should equip themselves not only professional knowledge, but also to language proficiency, good skills in problem solving, teamwork.

STUDY PETROLEUM ENGINEERING AT HCMUT

Our four-year Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering program features studies in physics, chemistry, mathematics, geology, economics and other specialist petroleum engineering topics. Students will be prepared adequately for petroleum industry and its related fields as drilling, exploitation, petroleum production, reservoir engineering and transportation of oil, natural gas and petroleum economics, etc. Graduates will work closely with other professionals, such as geologists, to locate the dig site, design and build the machines that extract as much oil and gas as possible, and oversee the removal and processing of the petroleum itself, etc. Soft skills such as teamwork, communication, identifying & solving problems through hands-on training are also offered to our students in a creative, professional, dynamic and competitive international environment. Graduates will work closely with other professionals, such as geologists, to locate the dig site, design and build the machines that extract as much oil and gas as possible, and oversee the removal and processing of the petroleum itself, etc.

Pathway to get the Bachelor Degree of Petroleum Engineering

Students have 2 options:

Option 1:

Students study at HCMUT for 4 years and get the Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering from HCMUT.

Option 2:

After completing 02 years at HCMUT, students with financial and academic eligibility may transfer to the University of Adelaide (Australia) the later 02 year to complete their study for Bachelor degree. The official bachelor degree is awarded bythe University of Adelaide (Australia)

The advantage of this option is that the student can save about 50% total fees (tuition fee and living expenses) compared to studying for full 4 years in Australia to get a Bachelor Degree awarded by the University of Adelaide (Australia)

For more information about the University of Adelaide (Australia), please visit The University of Adelaide (ADL), Australia
